Radio Ad Suggests Vasectomies During NCAA Tourney

Patients Leave Hospital With Pizza Coupon, Bag Of Frozen Peas

Minneapolis, Minn. (CBS) ― It's something rarely if ever heard advertised on radio or television, but this year a local urology clinic discovered a clever way to cash in on March Madness.

Urology Associates are running radio ads encouraging men to get their vasectomies during the NCAA basketball tournament.

"Men tend to be a little more wimpy in regards to pain, so they tend to put off the obvious procedure and find reasons not to come in," said Urologist Dr. Jeffery Twidwell.

So Urology Associates took a cutting edge approach to convince men that now is a great time to get a vasectomy.

"Get your vasectomy ... the day before the tournaments and relax the next couple days watching the games," the radio ad says.

A sales rep at WCCO Radio contacted Urology Associates about creating the ad after hearing about a similar one in Oregon.

"So he came over, we talked and put together a script," said Urology Associates Administrator, Barb Wedekind.

The ad says, "why not use that time to recover from a vasectomy? When the tournament approaches, you need an excuse to stay at home and sit in front of the big screen."

Each patient goes home with a recovery kit, including sports magazines, a gift card for pizza and a frozen bag of peas, Wedekind said.

"Ice down below," Twidell said. "That's where the little joke about the frozen peas comes in. Basically frozen corn or frozen peas just tend to form to the area - shall we say - more easily than large ice cubes."

Urology Associates is getting a good response from the ads. Many of the inquiries about the procedure is coming from wives.
