Police: Football Coach Nearly Bit Man's Ear Off

WINTHROP, Mass. (CBS) ― An assistant football coach at Winthrop High School in Massachusetts has been charged in a brutal attack in which police say he nearly bit a man's ear off.

Richard Fucillo was arraigned on charges of assault and battery and mayhem in East Boston District Court Monday, reports CBS station WBZ-TV.

Fucillo is accused of attacking George Sennott of Revere, Mass., on Thursday. Sennott needed more 150 stitches to repair his left ear.

Prosecutors say Fucillo was upset because Sennott was dating his estranged wife. She has a restraining order out against Fucillo.

He pleaded not guilty and was released on $500 bail. Afterwards outside the courthouse, WBZ's David Robichaud asked Fucillo about the incident.

"I have no idea about the 150 stitches, I have no idea about anything," he said.

Fucillo is well-known in Winthrop as his brother is the head football coach at the high school and his sister is the principal.

According to a published report, Richard Fucillo helped form the Viking Pride Foundation in 2004, a booster foundation that raised money to keep sports alive at Winthrop High School. He also was honored by the New England Patriots for his work in the community.
