Man Slowly Recovers After Patterson Park Attack
by Peggy Lee
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
A Baltimore man continues a slow and painful recovery after being badly beaten in early June.
The wife of Zach Sowers is calling for the community to take action so that another person won't be victimized the way her husband has been.
"We live in Baltimore because we like it here and we're not going to stand for the violence that has increased," said Anna Sowers.
Just 10 feet from his Patterson Park home, 27-year-old Zach Sowers was beaten within an inch of his life. Baltimore City Police say four men robbed him, then left him to die on the street where he lived.
"The first time I saw him, I didn't even recognize him because the assault was that horrific. It was a mugging. They could have easily asked him for his watch, wallet," she said.
Since the June 1 attack, Sowers has been hospitalized, in a coma.
"I guess this weekend something just happened and he's going to need to get better and start fresh again at therapy," Sowers said.
Police arrested 18-year-old Wilburt Martin, 17-year-old Arthur Jeter, 16-year-old Eric Price and 16-year-old Trayvox Ramos. Police say the teens used Sowers' credit cards at two gas stations and to rent DVDs. All are charged with attempted murder.
"I feel angry, I feel scared and I just pray and hope that he gets better," she said.
It's that anger that's fueling action. She's calling for people and businesses to come out to Patterson Park, Canton and Federal Hill on August 5 for a Neighborhood Night Out. She hopes to raise awareness for crime and funds for Zach's treatment.
"I know people in the community know about what happened to Zach and so I want people to not just talk about it but do something to help the situation," Sowers said.
Those four teens will be arraigned on July 18.
