Family & Friends Say Goodbye To Detective Chesley

by Mike Hellgren
Baltimore, MD (WJZ/AP) ― Family and friends said their last goodbye Tuesday as Baltimore Police Detective Troy Chesley was laid to rest.

WJZ's Mike Hellgren talked to mourning family and friends. "He cared about where he worked he cared about the people he worked with. He was one of these guys doing the right thing for the right reasons." Says Osborne McCarter.

Governor-elect and departing Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley told mourners Tuesday "It's not right" that a city police detective was taken from them and the community.

O'Malley spoke at the funeral today for Detective Troy Chesley, who was shot and killed outside his girlfriend's home shortly after going off-duty one week ago. O'Malley also asked for the community's help in making the city safer a theme echoed by Police Commissioner Leonard Hamm.

The service began at 11 am at New Shiloh Baptist Church on North Monroe Street. Officers saluted as they filed past the coffin, while a chorus sang joyous gospel standards. Photos from throughout Chesley's life were projected onto screens on the walls flanking the chorus. A flower arrangement to the right of the coffin spelled "T-ROY."
