Defendant Won't Face Death In Officer's Slaying

BALTIMORE (AP) ― Prosecutors in Baltimore say they will seek a mandatory life prison term for the man accused of murdering a city
police officer.

That's not enough for police union President Paul Blair, who says 21-year-old Brandon Grimes should be eligible for the death penalty.

Grimes is accused of shooting and killing Officer Troy Chesley in the early morning of January 9 as Chesley was returning home from work. The State's Attorney's office says that to seek the death penalty, prosecutors would have to prove that Grimes knew Chesley was a police officer and that Chesley -- who was not in uniform -- was actually on duty.

Grimes formally entered a not guilty plea yesterday in Circuit Court.

Since his arrest, he's also been charged with two first-degree attempted murders. Police say Grimes committed those crimes before shooting Chesley.
