Metro Limits Speed Of Aboveground Trains

WASHINGTON (AP) ―

Metro trains are operating at slower-than-usual speeds Sunday because of safety concerns.

Metro says leaves that have lingered on trees longer than usual this season, are being crushed onto the tracks by train wheels. The combination of the crushed leaves and today's rain has resulted in difficult braking and accelerating conditions for trains.

The speed limit is 30 miles an hour in all aboveground areas of the 106-mile rail system. Riders on those stretches can expect their trips to take a little longer. Track work in some areas of the system also will result in lengthier trips.
