Governor Martin O'Malley's administration is expected to introduce a proposal to provide medical coverage to more than 100,000 state residents currently without health insurance.
Legislative leaders tell The (Baltimore) Sun the plan would expand Medicaid eligibility and offer subsidies to small
businesses. Baltimore Delegate Peter Hammon says Maryland currently ranks among the lowest states in the nation in terms of coverage.
The proposal will be introduced during the special legislative session that begins Monday in Annapolis. Legislative approval could hinge on adoption of the governor's proposals to close the state's projected $1.7 billion deficit. State Senate President Mike Miller says he will support a health care bill if it doesn't add to the deficit.
