Body Found At Inner Harbor
by Gigi Barnett
Baltimore, Md. (WJZ) ―
Baltimore City Police tell
WJZ.COM that a body was discovered floating in the Inner Harbor this morning. The body had been there for several days and was wrapped in an orange, waterproof covering, according to fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright.
Cartwright says the department received a 9-1-1 call, around 9:30 Saturday morning, from nearby workers who said a floating body was seen near 301 Light Street. When officials arrived, they found the body of an adult, fully-clothed African-American male, who appeared to be between the ages of 30 and 40.
"We have no knowledge of what exactly happened to the individual. The ultimate cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner," Cartwright tells
Eyewitness News.
Cartwright also says the male was partially decomposed and had no visible signs of trauma.
WJZ's Gigi Barnett went to the scene, where dozens of tourists lingered near the yellow tape that cordoned off the gruesome crime scene.
A witness, who was wants to remain anonymous, says he was cleaning the harbor when a crowd of people called for help.
"His head and shoulder [were] sticking up out of the water..the rest of it was underneath," he says. "Every now and then something like this happens. When you're around water...it can happen any time."
Tourist Anne Marie Kramer agrees. "It wouldn't deter me from coming back...this happens anywhere."
The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office where an autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.
