Charleston Mayor Makes Pick For New Fire Chief

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ― Charleston Mayor Joe Riley has announced his selection for the city's next fire chief.

Riley said during a news conference Monday that Montgomery County, Md., Fire Chief Thomas Carr should lead the department.

Former Charleston Fire Chief Rusty Thomas retired in June, a year after nine firefighters died in a furniture store blaze.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Carr was chosen from a field of seven veteran firefighters. The newspaper says the Charleston native's appointment must be confirmed by city council.
