Counties Give Qualified Support For Slots

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― The Maryland Association of Counties is urging state lawmakers to approve Governor Martin O'Malley's plan
to close the state's projected $1.7 billion deficit.

The organization also is giving qualified support for legal slot machine gambling, provided host communities are compensated for impact expenses and local zoning rules are respected.

The counties also warned lawmakers Thursday that if the state chooses spending cuts over tax increases to close the deficit, county governments would be forced to consider their own cuts and tax increases.

A special legislative session to address the budget deficit is scheduled to convene Monday.
