New Coal Mine Would Go Beneath Md. Trout Stream

FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) ― A Pennsylvania coal company has applied for Maryland mining permit that would allow it to tunnel beneath a popular trout stream in western Maryland.

Maryland Energy Resources is seeking to establish an underground
mine south of Grantsville beneath approximately 3,000 acres crossed
by the South Branch of the Casselman River.

Company spokesman Joseph Peles (PELL-ess) says the tunnel would
be 400 feet deep. He says no harm would come to the river.

The company was created by the Joseph Peles Coal Company of
Indiana, Pa.

The proposed Casselman Coal Mine would create at least 20 jobs
initially and produce an estimated 360,000 tons of coal annually
for 20 years.
