Fatal Stabbing Alarms Neighbors In Brooklyn

by Suzanne Collins
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A woman is discovered on her front porch stabbed to death and now her neighbors worry that a violent killer is on the loose.

Suzanne Collins reports 51-year-old Karen Kutchey was found dead in the Brooklyn section of Baltimore.

Police say they don't know the motive nor do they have a suspect right now. So, neighbors wonder if this was random. Neighbors are not sure if they should be extra cautious about safety.

Flowers were left in the front yard after Kutchey's body was found. Her body had severe traumatic injuries all over, but police are not saying yet, just how she died.

"The flowers, I thought it was the least I could do for respect," said Larry Wallett, a former neighbor.

A postal carrier found the body Thursday on the porch at 5th and Jack Streets.

The house is pretty neatly kept, with well groomed landscaping. Neighbors say the victim worked consistently to keep it that way.

"It's just devastating being the next door neighbor, that this could happen in this neighborhood," said neighbor Bernice Fiore.

The neighbors say Kutchey grew up in the home and still lived there, with her elderly mother. Neighbors say the older woman was away Thursday when the body was discovered.

Police have little information.

"Right now it's too early to know if she was targeted or if this was a crime of opportunity or whatever," said Officer Troy Harris, a spokesperson for Baltimore City Police.

This brutal murder has neighbors worried. One woman says she'll be using the deadbolt lock on her door. Others are hesitant to answer, when there's a knock.

"I'm even afraid to leave the windows open now. She was the best neighbor, always quiet. She kept the yard really nice," said neighbor Julie Davis.

There is a reward of $200 for a tip leading to an arrest and indictment. Police are asking people to provide them with any information they may have on this murder.
