New Developments In Police Officer Shooting
by Suzanne Collins
Baltimore, MD (WJZ) ―
There may be two more suspects in the murder of city police officer Troy Chesley.
WJZ's Suzanne Collins joins us live to explain that's just one detail that came out during a hearing Friday morning for suspect Brandon Grimes.
Eyewitness News got access to the murder warrant for Brandon Grimes. It reveals a graphic picture of what happened early Tuesday morning when Officer Chesley was murdered and police say the suspect was shot by return fire during an attempted robbery.
The arrest warrant for Brandon Grimes says he shot Officer Chesley two times as Chesley was putting the key into his door when getting home from his shift. The officer had his police badge properly displayed on his waist. Investigators found a trail of blood leading from the scene and believe the officer fired back, wounding a suspect. Another 9mm handgun is found halfway along the blood trail. Witnesses say they saw a dark minivan racing from the scene.
Later, there's a report of a person arriving at St. Agnes Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. A surveillance camera shows Brandon Grimes staggering out of a dark van with the help of two people. Those unnamed people were interviewed by detectives and admit to seeing a shootout between Grimes and the officer. The van is searched and inside is a bloody wallet belonging to Brandon Grimes.
The judge imposed a gag order in the case Friday when Grimes' public defender argued there was a lot being said about the suspect's prior criminal record, which could taint a future jury.
Grimes, who remains in the hospital, will be formally charged with murder when he recovers.
