Man Crossing I-81 Hit By Truck, Killed

SMITHSBURG, Md. (AP) ― State police say a 32-year-old Smithsburg man was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while trying to cross Interstate 81 in Washington County.

It happened around 2:50 a.m. Tuesday on I-81 just south of the Interstate 70 interchange.

Police say William Dan Hewett Jr. and another person were trying to cross when Hewett was hit by a southbound tractor trailer and thrown into the guardrail. Police say Hewett was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.
