NTSB To Consider Final Water Taxi Report
WASHINGTON (AP) ―
The National Transportation Safety Board is scheduled to meet this morning in Washington to consider the final report of its investigation into the fatal water taxi accident two years ago this week in Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
The report is expected to look at the response of the captain to the weather conditions, the seaworthiness of the water taxi and Coast Guard certification procedures.
Five people were killed when the pontoon water taxi, the Lady D, capsized in a sudden storm.
The NTSB released a preliminary finding nine months after the accident revealing that the boat was carrying 700 pounds of excess weight. Although the number of people on the water taxi was did not exceed its certified capacity, the report found that the Coast Guard had used outdated average population weights in setting capacity limits.
A simulation later showed that the vessel was too unstable and heavy to withstand the wind and waves in the harbor.
