New Express Toll Lanes Being Added To I-95
by Mike Schuh
WHITE MARSH, Md. (WJZ) ―
A major new road project is underway in Baltimore County and it will bring tolls and hopefully faster traffic to I-95.
Mike Schuh reports on the Express Toll Lanes Project being worked on in the White Marsh area.
The ETLP will span 10 miles of I-95.
The new lanes will start just south of the I-95 and I-895 split and run north past MD-43.
Once complete, project leaders say the ETLP will ease congestion and increase safety.
The project will include improvements to the mainline roadway, reconstruction of bridges and adjustments to interchanges.
One of the interchanges alone, which is 44-years-old, will account for $400 million of the total $900 million the project will cost.
The project's main addition will be four new express lanes--two in each direction--in the most congested portion of I-95 north of Baltimore City.
When construction is finished, officials say drivers in the non-toll lanes will be able to move faster and drivers in the express lanes where tolls are collected will also be able to move faster.
"These tolls are collected at highway speeds," said Project Manager Dave LaBella. "Congestion will be relieved to a degree on the general purpose lanes because you will have some of the traffic moved over to the express toll lanes."
Toll rates have not yet been set, but officials say it is likely that different rates will apply for different times of the day.
