Md. Lawmakers Hope To Get Children Medical Care
by Gigi Barnett
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
It's the kind of dental prevention more than six million children miss every year.
It could have saved 12-year-old Deamonte Driver last year when he complained of a toothache. He died earlier this year when a tooth infection spread to his brain. Deamonte, like thousands of other children, didn't have access to dental care and his mother couldn't find an affordable dentist.
"This young man was the victim of our neglect. This young man is not a statistic. He is a human being," said Congressman Steny Hoyer.
Now Maryland lawmakers are urging President Bush to approve a new children's healthcare bill that allows low-income children to receive dental attention.
President Bush has promised to veto the bill.
"It is incomprehensible that the president would even threaten to veto this bill," said Congressman John Sarbanes.
Part of the bill stresses education and access for parents who do not know where to get reduced or free dental health care.
