BALTIMORE (AP) ―
Darryl Proctor and Jay Greene each scored 14 points and Maryland-Baltimore County held Toledo without a field goal for nearly 9 minutes down the stretch to win 61-56 on Saturday.
The Retrievers (4-2), who extended their winning streak to nine games, went on a 17-2 run that spanned over eight minutes in the second half. UMBC made 18 of 20 free throws during the spurt.
Tyrone Kent led the Rockets (1-5) with 19 points.
Toledo broke a 37-37 tie with 14:40 left after Kent blocked Justin Fry's attempted 3-pointer then scored on a layup.
Kent hit a 3-pointer to push the Rockets lead to 50-43.
But the Retrievers regained the lead on after 8-0 run, capped by Rich Flemming's dunk off an alley-oop from Jay Greene to put UMBC ahead 51-50 with 3:46 left in the game.
Proctor followed with a 3-pointer and the Retrievers hit six free throws to seal the win.
