Sailors Float Into Baltimore To Raise Money

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Some of the best sailors in the world are in Baltimore.  It's all part of a big race for charity.

Ron Matz reports on the festivities going on at the Inner Harbor.

One of the world's oldest and largest tall ships, Norway's Statraad Lehmkuhl, made a grand entrance and was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.
 
The ship arrived at the Inner Harbor Friday morning.

"This is real, America's Cup action. These gentlemen understand its a charity event, but they're fierce competitors and will put on a a great show," said John Pica, Senator's Cup Chairman.

Just a few yards away crews were getting ready to set sail for charity,.
After several years in Annapolis the Senator's Cup Regatta is back in Baltimore.

"All the money raised goes to the Living Classrooms, the Maryland Special Olympics and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation," said Pica.

The race brings together the elite of the sailing world including veterans of the Volvo Ocean Race.

While they've sailed all over the world, these competitors are happy to be in Baltimore.

"It's great here at the Inner Harbor, I live in Annapolis and I've raced in the America's cup and the Volvo. I Have a lot of good memories here," said Champion Sailor, Chris Larson.

Proceeds from the Senator's Cup will benefit the Living Classrooms Foundation. The race begins Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
