Roberts Talks To Student Athletes About Steroids

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Thrown into the center of baseball's steroid scandal, Oriole Brian Roberts took center stage Friday before a large group of student athletes.

As Alex DeMetrick reports, Roberts is using his bad experience to keep others from sharing it.

Brian Roberts' dream of playing in the majors came true when the Orioles called him up.

But it wasn't baseball that placed him into a brighter spotlight, when an investigation named him as a steroid user, and he admitted it.

In a room packed with student athletes from Baltimore City and County, Roberts called his steroid use one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

"I fell into temptation one day, and it's been hard for me for a long, long time," said Roberts.

That temptation to be bigger and stronger is rampant in high school athletics.

Roberts told his audience steroids are behind him.  Now, it's only hard work.

"It's hard enough to look at yourself in the mirror and say, 'I'm human, I screwed up,'" said Roberts.

The seminar was pulled together by a number of schools and agencies, under the sponsorship of Saint Joseph Hospital.
