Huge Soccer Game Scores For Baltimore Economy

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Some of the hottest football players in the world are on their way to Charm City.  This weekend, the game we call soccer will take over downtown Baltimore with the largest soccer event we've seen.  Weijia Jiang has more on how this game will boost the city's economy.

On Friday, 70,000 people will fill the seats at M&T Bank Stadium to watch an international football game.

"This is the first time in this stadium we've had a major soccer event," said Roy Summerhoff.

Two of the best soccer teams in the world, Chelsea England and Milan Italy, are taking over the turf.

"This is as big as it gets, two of the biggest teams in the world," said Simon Ambrose, Challenger Sports, Inc.

Last week, crews prepared the field, because rules mandate natural grass.

The games bring in fans from around the world, including Challenger Sports directors who organize a hundred soccer camps in the region.

"Chelsea Milan, two really big teams for their countries and we think it's gonna be a real treat for the guys and girls of Baltimore to watch it," said Paul Hennessey.

Visitors to the city offer a much needed economic boost, to the tune of an expected $25 million.

"You're talking about hotels being full, using restaurants, people spending money," said Mayor Sheila Dixon.

"It brings a lot of tax dollars to the city and the state," said Tom Noonan, BACVA.

"Putting Baltimore in the international light really takes us to another level, so we're excited about it," Dixon said.

Because there is so much excitement and so many people expected to pack into the stadium, the city is urging everyone to take public transportation.

"Or if you must drive, we ask you leave early, park your car and travel around on foot," said Adrienne Barnes, Department of Transportation.

However you get there, the game is sure to score major goals for soccer lovers and for Charm City.

"Baltimore is going to be buzzing this weekend," Ambrose said.
