Orioles Provide Lesson In Basics Of Baseball

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

School's out for the summer, but summer school is a reality for many Baltimore City students.

Sally Thorner
reports there's a new partnership between Baltimore City Orioles, which means for students learning's never been so much fun.

Before he was a baseball manager, the Orioles' Dave Trembley used to be a teacher and it shows.

"There's a different sound that you hear, as it gets up here, as it gets up in this sweet spot area," he said.

In the midst of a stressful season, today's 'lesson' is grounding.

"It's the fun part of a job, to let everybody know that you care about them, and that you'd like to be apart of this community, and not just be in your own little area of Camden Yards, and managing a baseball team," adds Trembley.

Fourth grader Perrish Briley's a believer.

"Because I never got a lesson from a pro, I've always dreamed of playing baseball because I have favorite baseball players," says Briley.

Mount Royal Elementary/Middle school's assistant principal knows how important this partnership is to her kids.

"The children have learned about the Orioles, things that they didn't know about, and for some of the children it may be the first time that they get to go to a baseball game, get to meet a player, to actually learn the basics of baseball," says Michelle Landen.

Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis is happy to be part of the 'curriculum' along with his wife Christina.

"Anytime you know she can come out here with me, you know she loves teaching, she used to be a teacher, so you know it makes it a little bit easier, and takes a little bit of presser off of me," said the right fielder.

Christina Markakis says her skill as a teacher means she comes prepared with a lesson plan.

"Well I hope that they can see which bat and which ball can work together to produce the furthest hit ball, and also that they can learn about Newton's law, and inertia, and movement," she said.

The baseball- themed summer learning program is an outgrowth of the city schools' partnership with the Orioles and Child First Authority.
