Ravens Help Feed The Hungry For Thanksgiving

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― It may be a difficult holiday season for families struggling to put food on the table, but some Baltimore Ravens tried to help on Tuesday.

Gigi Barnett has more on the efforts to bring Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of local families in need.

Several of Baltimore's purple birds thought they'd give back some Thanksgiving birds to people who needed them.

For more than 400 Baltimore families, Thanksgiving dinner was served two days early--uncooked, but free, thanks to Baltimore Raven Ray Lewis.  Every year, Lewis teams up with churches, community centers and volunteers to give away turkeys, green beans and stuffing.  He says the giveaway is becoming a holiday event in his family.

"I'm here for one reason--to tell somebody, whatever you're going through, it's OK," Ray Lewis said.

But he remembers when he and his family--his mom and four siblings--were the recipient of lines like these.

"I watched my mom with five, so these same lines we were in," Lewis said.

That's why Lewis finds volunteers to help with the giveaway.

"Everybody needs to give back once in a while," said Brian Martin.  "You never know what someone went through to get to the top."

Families were chosen by local churches and community outreach groups to receive the meals.

Several other Ravens players including Willis McGahee, Ray Rice, Jared Gaither and Ben Grubbs also hosted Thanksgiving dinners for needy families or gave away holiday food baskets.
