Fans Ready For 133rd Annual Preakness
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
It's a time-tested tradition in Baltimore, and Saturday is the running of the 133rd Preakness stakes. From the grandstand to the infield,
Gigi Barnett explains why.
A long day at the races starts with a long line at security.
"Everybody gets together and they have a good time. It's awesome," said Lyndsay Perkins.
Up to 50,000 people can fit on the grounds at Pimlico. Many of them chose the infield.
Wayne Silver hasn't missed it in the last 32 years. For him, the infield is an easy party.
"It used to get crazy out here," he said. "We come here, we bring the food and we leave. Nobody had to worry about the mess."
If the infield is the storm, the grandstand is the calm. That's why many people choose this spot. It's also a closer view of the Preakness.
"It's just not a party. It's more of an event to us," said David Cox.
In the grandstand, it's a different experience. The odds, horses and hats all make sense.
"We're here to have a little bit of fun and, at the same time, wager a few dollars here and there," Cox said.
The infield celebrations have been part of the Preakness for more than 30 years.
