Guthrie Gets Around By Bicycle

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

Right-hander Jeremy Guthrie doesn't worry about gas prices in Baltimore approaching $4 a gallon. He relies on his own feet for transportation.

That bicyclist you encounter around the Inner Harbor on your next drive to Camden Yards might be the starting pitcher in that night's game.

"I've ridden my bike since I was 5," said Guthrie. "We didn't depend on my parents to take us places. We rode our bikes to Little League games or to the baseball card shop to get cards."

Guthrie took part in a press event Friday to promote Sunday's National Bike to Work Day, joining Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon on a two-wheeled trek from the Inner Harbor to City Hall.

The Orioles are encouraging fans to celebrate the occasion by cycling to Sunday's game.

Discounted ticket vouchers will be available to any cyclists who pedal to Camden Yards, and bicycles can be safely stored outside Gate C.

Guthrie will be piloting his Gary Fisher model, as usual. He opts for that mode of transportation because it's more environmentally friendly -- and fun.

"I enjoy riding my bike, so that's what it is -- enjoyment," he said. "I've never had a close call, so I'm sure they're pretty courteous drivers around here."
