Durability Vs. Speed In Horse Breeding

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ―

The death of filly Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby has the racing industry examining whether durability is an afterthought when it comes to breeding horses.

Racing careers are getting shorter. That's partly because horses with racing success as 3-year-olds are likely to be retired to the breeding shed by the time they're four.

Veterinarian Larry Bramlage says shorter careers may be making the breed more fragile.

Derby winner Big Brown's sire raced eight times before getting injured. His dam ran only twice and his two grand-sires three times. Should Big Brown win Saturday's Preakness and the Triple Crown, he could be retired as one of the richest stallions in the world.
