Ravens' O.J. Brigance Receives Courage Award
BALTIMORE (AP) ―
Baltimore Ravens director of player development O.J. Brigance was recognized with the Johnny Unitas Tops in Courage award at the annual Ed Block Courage Awards banquet Tuesday.
The former Ravens linebacker was diagnosed last year with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an often fatal illness commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease that systematically affects nerve cells and muscles.
While continuing to work for the Ravens, Brigance has also become an ambassador for ALS research through Johns Hopkins' Packard Center.
The award Brigance received was previously given to the late Carolina Panthers linebacker Sam Mills.
Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett, who recovered from a fractured spine to regain the ability to walk, was another prominent honoree.
