Orioles' Johnson On The Rise

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

Every time Trembley gives rookie Jim Johnson a new challenge, the right-hander meets it.

The most recent came Tuesday night, when Trembley called on Johnson with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and the Orioles holding a 5-3 lead.

Johnson's mission: Deal with Boston slugger Manny Ramirez, who was sitting on 498 career home runs.

"I needed a power arm at that particular time to face Ramirez," Trembley said. "It was a situation where I needed a strikeout."

Johnson exceeded expectations, inducing a comebacker he turned into a 1-2-3 double play. In 14 relief outings, the converted starter is 0-1 with a 1.19 ERA and has allowed 11 hits and seven walks in 22 2/3 innings.

"For a guy who's never pitched out of the bullpen before, what he's been is he's been resilient with the ability to pitch back-to-back days and he's been resilient with coming in situations in the middle of the inning," Trembley said. "I was kind of tentative about bringing him in when he first got here in the middle of an inning because he's never done that before."
