Supersibs Program Helps Siblings Of Cancer Victims
by Adam May
Baltimore, MD (WJZ) ―
Baltimore children who have a sibling with cancer are finding new support from a group called Supersibs.
The organization was founded just a couple of years ago.
They're already helping thousands of families across the country.
Because of the Baltimore area has many well-respected hospitals, Supersibs is finding a growing need in Maryland.
Children who join Supersibs must have a brother or sister going through cancer.
Only in recent years have doctors recognized how these so called "supersibs" can actually suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome or other pschycoilgical problems.
Founder, Melanie Goldish says, "We send them something in the mail eight to ten times a year. Something that will bring smile and hope, so they know someone remembers they're going through this journey too."
The children get trophies, books and newsletters that connect them with other children in their shoes.
The Goodeweaver family in Baltimore says they've seen a tremendous change in their 11 year sold son Brooks.
After his 9 year old sister Eria was diagnosed with Leukemia, Brooks developed nervous ticks and developed behavior issues at school.
"She got all the attention, because she was sick," says Brooks.
Brooks says Supersibs makes him "feel important."
