Howard Co Offers Free Virgin Tickets To Volunteers

More Information On Summer Of Services

COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) ― The Virgin Musical Festival has a new location this year and a new price, it's free!

Ron Matz reports even though all the tickets are gone music fans can still get in, thanks to what's being called the Summer of Service.

After four years, the Virgin Music Festival has moved from Pimlico Race Course to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. It's now the Virgin Mobile Freefest. As you might expect tickets went inĀ minutes.

People can still purchase tickets, thanks to what Virgin Mobile calls a Summer of Service.

Volunteer in the community and get a ticket to the fest.

"We believe that if we could take care of the economic problems for at least just one day, then those people would then in turn would focus on those less fortunate than them," said Ron Faris, Virgin Mobile U.S. "Think of it as a sense of karma, we could pass on the ticket to you and in a sense, you'll do the same in helping others."

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman has set aside 400 tickets for those who give blood.

"This is the Summer of Service, blood, sweat and volunteers. We have a partnership with the Red Cross. The Red Cross has a major shortage of blood this summer. If you participate in one of their three blood drives you'll get a ticket [to the free fest]," Executive Ken Ulman.

Virgin is encouraging volunteers to help at youth homeless shelters.

"Our issue that we're looking to bring attention to is youth homelessness. There are 2 million youth ages 12 to 24 that are going to undergo some form of homelessness this year," said Faris.

It will be a big gift of music in Howard County on August 30.

"There are at least 15 non-profits in Howard County, who have asked to participate in this. They have volunteer slots between now and about a week before the concert," said Ulman. "On Thursday at noon you'll be able to register for specific volunteer opportunities throughout the county."
