The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is typically the busiest travel weekend of the year.
Jessica Kartalija reports gas prices are holding steady and that's good news for drivers.
Thanksgiving's over, but holiday travel is in full swing.
"Sunday is usually the day people are heading back, so we expect that the roads will be crowded," said Ragina Averella, AAA Mid-Atlantic.
They estimate almost 800,000 Marylanders will travel this holiday weekend.
"Traveling has been kind of rough. A lot of stop-and-go traffic, I've noticed," one driver said.
Taking to the skies proved to more of a challenge this year, thanks to higher fees and fewer flights. The number of seats on domestic flights has dropped more than three percent from this same time last year.
With tight budgets, travelers took to the tracks. Amtrak added more trains to accommodate more people. Bus companies also fared well, adding more vehicles to handle the heavy load.
Still, the most popular way to travel is by car. AAA says with gas prices at an average of $2.63 per gallon, you can expect more motorists.
"The vast majority. In fact, 86% will be driving to their families, friends, whatever, so we expect the roads to be quite crowded," Averella said.
Experts recommend leaving before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m. to avoid the holiday rush.
AAA predicted a 6.7% drop in the number of people flying this Thanksgiving weekend.
