Volunteers Want To Rebuild Burned Down Park

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A Northeast Baltimore playground burned to the ground.  An arsonist was to blame.  Now a neighborhood group plans to rebuild what was lost.

Tim Williams has more on how volunteers could help make a difference.

A community group is signing up volunteers and raising money to rebuild a playground devastated by arsonists.

"Unfortunately, we're rebuilding because it was burned down by an arsonist back in September. So we've been rallying the community and we've been getting out everywhere we can to tell people that we are going to rebuild and we're not going to let this stop us," said Marisa Conino.

It was early last September when the playground at the site of old Memorial Stadium was set ablaze. A neighborhood watched in disbelief as the result of 3,500 volunteers and half a million dollars went up in smoke.

Now the keepers of the playground are gathering troops and starting from the ground up the first week of May.

"The reality is that there is so much support in this community for this project that we know we just need to tell people what we need and they're gonna come," Conino said.

Organizers of this build realize that times are tough and that unfortunately, there may be some skilled craftsmen currently unemployed.  Their hope is those people may donate their time and specialty for a good cause.

"It might actually be a great chance for networking with other folks who are there--contractors who might be donating their time.  So, like I said before, there's a job for everyone and we really want people to come and be a part of this great community effort," Conino said.
