City Schools Unveil Summer School Program
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
The school year is coming to a close, and that means parents are searching for summer activities for students.
Gigi Barnett reports city schools unveiled its summer school program weeks before the last day of school.
Throughout the school year, learning continues. But over the summer months, teachers say the brain drain occurs.
City school leaders say parents should plan early, so the school district unveiled its new summer program Friday.
Parents were invited to take a look to prepare weeks before the last day of class.
"It allows students not to have a loss of learning during those three months, during summer. And we also believe that it can accelerate our young people and help to prepare them to enter the next grade," said Jonathan Brice, Executive Director of Student Services.
Parents are interested. Last year, more than 23,000 students enrolled at 98 schools around the city.
This year, just as many are expected for two programs that last four or six weeks.
The price tag for city schools is $7 million.
"Soon as I saw it was the summer program, I said, 'where does my daughter's name go?'" said parent Doug Thompson.
Thompson's 7th-grade daughter is ready to go. He fears the summer months will cause her to lose what she's learned during the school year.
"They need learning all year around. They may not agree with it, but as far as I am concerned, they can be in school seven days a week, and it only helps them," said Thompson.
While keeping students in the classroom over the summer strengthens their math and reading skills, some parents also like it because it helps students socially.
"Throughout the school year, he's made some friends and now he has a chance to get more closer, find his circle, and find his niche and also get away from me for a few hours," said parent Grace Agnant.
The last day of class for city schools is June 12.
