Showcall Inc. To Lay Foundation For Pope's Visit
WASHINGTON (WJZ) ―
Rain or shine, an outdoor mass conducted by Pope Benedict is set for April 17.
It will be held at Washington's brand new Nationals Stadium.
Alex DeMetrick reports it's posing challenges for the Maryland company orchestrating the ceremony.
In a Halethorpe warehouse in Baltimore County, lights and staging that have been used for everything from rock concerts to presidential inaugurals are being readied for a solo appearance.
Next month when Pope Benedict makes his first U.S. visit, Showcall Incorporated will provide a 21st century pulpit.
"Everything from stagehands, carpenters, electricians, producers. It's a huge undertaking," said Blayne Candy with Showcall Inc.
Showcall has staged presidential appearances in the past and was the technical coordinator behind last November's Mideast summit in Annapolis.
Now it falls to the company to construct, light and mic the stage for the papal mass.
It will take 500 workers to stage the outdoor mass which will seat 47,000 people.
