Barbaro's Jockey To Ride In Preakness Stakes
PIMLICO, Md. (WJZ) ―
It's been two years since Triple-Crown hopeful Barbaro broke down just after the start of the Preakness.
Barbaro's injury, recovery and eventual death captured the nation's heart.
Richard Sher reports Barbaro's jockey Edgar Prado is back in Baltimore to ride in this year's Preakness.
When you're one of the world's leading jockeys, you're in constant demand. That's why Edgar Prado's Friday began early with the signing of 150 valuable autographs of his Kentucky Derby win on Barbaro.
Prado has clenched more than 6,000 wins, and he's back in Baltimore where Barbaro broke down Preakness Day 2006.
"After the injury now, we feel very, very sad about it and very devastated," said Prado.
Prado visited Barbaro often as his favorite horse was fighting for his life.
"I went to see him about six times, and every time he tell me, I mean he let me know how he felt at the time," said Prado.
On the tragic loss of Eight Belles breaking down at the Kentucky Derby, Prado says these young horses are properly trained.
"It is compared to a 20-year-old person, and that's when they're in their prime, and that's when they do their best. You don't want to go to the NFL and hire a guy that's 60-years-old," said Prado.
Prado was the featured guest at a special event held at Pimlico Friday morning. There he signed his critically acclaimed book, "My Guy Barbaro."
"The book was a roller coaster ride and was very emotional, you know," said Prado.
Prado will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Aug. 4.
"After I'm long gone, people will remember me. I did a great job at something I really loved the most, riding horses," said Prado.
