BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Major medical news from the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.

Richard Sher reports the University of Maryland Medical Center and the R Baby Foundation have dedicated a new $100,000 laboratory to develop rapid tests for diagnosing viral infectious diseases in infants.

The R Baby Foundation was established after Phyllis and Andrew Rabinowitz lost their 9-day-old daughter Rebecca in 2006. The new lab is called the Rebecca Rabinowitz Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.

Phyllis Rabinowitz grew up in Baltimore and says, "I am thrilled with the partnership. I feel confident the new Rebecca Rabinowitz Laboratory will enable physicians to detect infant infections more rapidly, and that we will help many families avoid the tragedy that Andrew and I endured. Together we will save the lives of countless babies."
