Volunteers Help Clean Up The Chesapeake Bay

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― The Chesapeake Bay is a vital source of water here in Maryland. That's why hundreds of volunteers decided to take the day to clear the clutter.

Middle Branch Park in South Baltimore is the perfect place for lunch or to fish, when it's clean that is. That's why hundreds of volunteers showed up to pick up trash during the "Clean Up Day For The Bay," created by the state's attorney general's office.

"I think that cleaning up the bay would be really nice 'cause I swim in it a lot and it's really icky to swim in dirty water," said Julia Young.

Volunteers cleaned up all the litter, empty bottles and trash they cound handle. It's left over from the city that spills into the bay, affecting life on and off the water.

"Most of this trash came from the land. People just throwing trash on the sidewalk and when the rain comes, it goes into the bay here," said Ellie Young.

"People just don't understand a connection. If they knew exactly how connected we were to the bay, especially from Baltimore. We're all crab eaters. If we keep destroying the bay, we're not going to get the crabs to eat," said Elmer Barksdale.

This bay cleanup is an all-day event. With 200 volunteers donating at least three hours of their time, that's 600 man hours all to clean up the bay.

"It's a great opportunity for recreation. It's great for the economy. We hope people will start to see more of it," said J.B. Howard.

Volunteers from the Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper and the Jones Fall Watershed Association also helped clean the bay Saturday.
