Brandon Malstrom's family and friends are working on the lacrosse field to keep his memory alive.
It was five years ago this month that University of Maryland student Brandon Malstrom was fatally stabbed to death on the College Park campus.
As
Gigi Barnett reports, Malstrom's family and friends are working on the lacrosse field to keep his memory alive.
The sticks, the helmets and action of lacrosse. Lacrosse was 20-year-old Brandon Malstrom's favorite game. But since his death five years ago, the games aren't the same.
"We miss him so much. He was a great kid," said Malstrom's friend, Deb Burrows.
In November 2002, Malstrom was stabbed to death outside an off-campus party at the University of Maryland. He died in the arms of his older brother.
His death ripped through the College Park campus.
"It was very shocking when I heard about him. I broke down and cried, as a lot of people did," said Pete Sclafani.
Brandon's parents created the Brandon Malstrom Memorial Foundation and mark his death every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving with a fundraising lacrosse game between former teammates at Dulaney High School.
"Everybody comes out and they play lacrosse and that's how they show respect for him," said Sclafani.
Some of the players in this game were on the Dulaney High School team with Brandon. Others were not. But organizers say that's part of the reason why this tribute to Brandon continues every year.
"It's just a testimony to the quality of friends he had, because without the friends and interest, we wouldn't be able to perpetuate this kind of thing," said Brandon's father, Bill.
This game is always followed up with a bull roast, a time for high school teammates to catch up on the field and remember Brandon.
"I think it's going to continue for many more years. As long as all of these guys can physically play, I think we'll be out here," Sclafani said.
The Brandon Malstrom Memorial Foundation raises nearly $20,000 during its annual Thanksgiving lacrosse game.
