Baltimore Neighborhood Celebrates Rebuilt Homes

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― It's a beautiful day in the Oliver neighborhood in East Baltimore. The first group of 122 affordable, energy efficient homes was opened.

Richard Sher reports Preston Place is a collaborative effort between TRF Development Partners and BUILD, Baltimoreans United In Leadership Development.

Vivian and Ernest Davis and their 15-day-old daughter Maya are buying one of the new homes.

"We are all so elated that we are able to do it," Vivian said.

"It will give our brand new daughter a better life," Ernest said.

Preston Place became a reality after seven members of the Dawson family died when a drug dealer set their house on fire in 2002.

"We wanted to honor the Dawsons and any other Baltimoreans who are fighting back, putting their lives on the line," Senator Barbara Mikulski said.

The state of Maryland provided $750,000 to TRF Development Partners for demolition in the neighborhood and development of Preston Place.

Governor O'Malley was there to congratulate all those partners who help make Preston Place a reality.
