Baltimore Honored For Saving Energy

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

In this day and age of rising energy prices, the city of Baltimore is spending millions to save energy.

Mike Schuh reports Baltimore was honored by the country's largest retailer, Wal-Mart, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors for their work.

The 2007 Climate Award was presented by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.  The mayor and the city were recognized for being among the best in the country at finding ways to save energy and climate protection.

At least 210 buildings are being retrofitted with new energy efficient lights, temperature controls, and bathroom fixtures.

Old energy hog traffic lights are being changed to LEDs and a plant to generate methane gas from landfill waste is being built.

"If you set a firm foundation now, we'll all have a better place, which means a healthier environment," said Mayor Sheila Dixon.

Nine other cities received similar honors.
