Dogs Can Donate Blood, Too

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ― The Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank, headquartered in Anne Arundel County, is just two away from having 6,000 doggie donors.

The blood bank was founded by veterinarian Ann Schneider in 1993 and has become the largest volunteer veterinary blood bank in the United States.

Two-year-old Rover and three-year-old Squeakie are regular donors.  Each of the shepherd mixes give some of their life-saving blood at the Muddy Creek Animal Hospital in West River.

"I saw the need.  They are helping other dogs, saving lives.  It's the right thing to do," Kirstyn Cobb told Richard Sher.

"Our goal was to show that the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank would serve a life-saving purpose, which is apparently the case," Schneider said.

The blood bank collects as many as 100 units of blood a week, which is stored across the country.

Unfortunately, cats are not good donors because they are too jumpy and would need to be sedated to donate.
