Md. Presidential Scholars Come From Same School

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (WJZ) ― There's big time bragging rights for one Howard County high school.

Centennial High in Ellicott City has provided the state of Maryland with both of its Presidential Scholars.

Centennial High has long been known to be one of the best public high schools in the state, if not the country.  This year, two students have taken the school to a whole new level.

Teresa Yeh and Peter Kamel look and act like your typical teenagers.

"We're just normal," Kamel said.

"Actually, I might not be normal," Yeh laughed.  "I like to do a lot of household things--bake, knit, read.  It's not always work, work, work."

These childhood friends have been named Presidential Scholars.  Every year, the award is given to one female and one male student from each state. But it's unprecedented that two students from the same school be named.

"We have great kids," said teacher Michelle Bagley.

These standouts have lots in common.  They both got perfect board scores, have 4.0 GPAs, play the viola, do a ton of community service and are continuing their research projects in medical school.  They have both been accepted by Rice University in Texas for an eight-year medical program.

"I'm passionate about using my talents for the good of other people," Kamel said.  "It's something I really look forward to."

Next month, they will join their counterparts for an entire week in Washington, where they will receive their award from President Barack Obama.
