Camp Face is a camp for children with congenital facial differences.
Friday night is the beginning of this year's session at Camp Face, a camp for children with congenital facial differences.
Camp Face in White Hall runs from this Friday through Sunday.
It's standing for finding anonymity in a camping environment. Each child at the camp was born with a congenital facial difference.
Camp Face was founded in 1993 by Dr. Craig Vander Kolk, associate director of plastic surgery at Mercy Medical Center.
"While we can do surgery and try to help the children, the important thing is how they deal with it internally," said Kolk.
Camp Face does this by allowing the children to interact with others who are dealing with the same issue.
Scott Summe, 24, is a counselor and former camper.
"Camp Face helps build their confidence by letting them be themselves," said Summe.
Summe is a cashier at Dick's Sporting Goods in Glen Burnie.
He says when people stare at him he tells them, "Yes, I have a facial deformity, but you should know that I can do a lot of of the same things you do."
Camp Face counselors are all volunteers. It is paid for by fundraisers and donations.
