Baltimore Prepares For Fashion Week

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― The hottest fashions can be seen on runways in Milan and New York, but Baltimore designers won't have to travel far to showcase their work.

As Gigi Barnett reports, Baltimore is preparing the catwalk for its Fashion Week.

The designers, models and clothes all make Fashion Week in New York, Paris and Milan sizzle.

Now, imagine the glitz and glam in Baltimore.

"In Baltimore, we have a lot of fashion. It's just unfortunate a lot of designers don't have a natural or local runway to show it," said Sharan Nixon, Baltimore Fashion Week Executive Director.

Now they do.

Designers like Samm Martin, who uses recycled material, will have a spotlight for his collection in Baltimore's Fashion Week.  For him, it's a chance to network with other local designers.

"There is a wealth of talent in this city.  Some cats as young as 15 and 16 are creating some wonderful pieces in their basements, their attics and in their living rooms," said designer Samm Martin.

City leaders say the younger the better.  Fashion Week may be the start of a fashion high school in Baltimore.

State senator Catherine Pugh traveled to New York looking for a blueprint for Baltimore.

"One of the things you have to begin to do is to engage people at a younger age.  I think having a fashion high school will also fuel these other institutions that have these programs and that have had them for some time," said Pugh.

Fashion Week in Baltimore begins Aug. 11.

Parts of the Fashion Week proceeds will go to four non-profit organizations. One of them is the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Maryland.
