Every detail of the upcoming presidential inauguration is carefully planned, even down to the letters on the invitations.
Every detail of the upcoming presidential inauguration is carefully planned, even down to the letters on the invitations.
As
Gigi Barnett reports, one Baltimore engraving company is charged with that task.
One by one hand-engraved invitations and programs are created for Barack Obama's presidential inauguration this month. To complete the job, the White House turned to Brewood Engravers in Baltimore.
And even though Jan. 20 looms, engravers never rush.
"It looks like an easy job, but it isn't. It takes a special type of person that does this type of work," Dennis Long said.
It's a craft that spans centuries. A small mistake can cost time and money.
"This engraving is the Cadillac of the printing," said Ernest Atkins, president of Brewood Engravers.
He says the extra work comes at a time when the company needs it most.
"This time of year, things are a little slow and the economy is not that good, so this gave us a lot of work and employees here. We work day and night."
The engraving company says potential customers take note of Brewood's clients in the White House.
The process starts with a steel engraved seal, carefully completed by a master engraver. That goes to print on high quality card stock. Finally, it's dried and ready for Inauguration Day.
For at least a decade, the state has hired Brewood to complete its engraving for special events.
