Shopping Locally Can Help Small Businesses In Md.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

The holiday shopping season is right around the corner, and local businesses hope Marylanders buy local.

Andrea Fujii spoke to a Baltimore company that relies on hometown support.

It's the busy season at Baltimore's Roma Sausage Company thanks to local connoisseurs.

It's six pounds of Polish sausage for Jon Reiman.

"Instead of having it some place bought in St. Louis and having it shipped here, at least we know it's here locally," said Reiman.

Roma sells about 120,000 pounds of sausage a month and during the holidays add at least 20 percent.

The president says that ensures jobs for his 15 employees.

"If you buy a local product, we're going to put local people to work. And then people put money back into your local economy," said Dean Paciocco, Roma Sausage president.

Independent businesses and local governments are hoping shoppers avoid the mega box stores that are driving some small businesses out of business.

Economists say money spent locally is multiplied throughout the city.

"For every dollar that you spend at a local shop, that shop owner maybe buys a pair of shoes and that shop owner buys some groceries," said Andrew Frank, Baltimore Economic Development.

That's one reason Rita Coxon buys Roma Polish Sausage for her Thanksgiving recipes.

"I want to buy local all the time if I can," she said.

Customers say local products distinguish themselves from the big box stores.

"Oh, are you kidding me? It's the best. It's delicious," said Coxon.

It's the enthusiasm for local products retailers hope catches on.

"If you support your local guy then you support local jobs. That's what local is, that's what local is all about," said Paciocco.

Baltimore City is promoting its "Miracle on Main Street Campaign," which encourages people to shop locally this holiday season.
