Clinton, Obama Woo Md. Voters Before Primary

(WJZ) The candidates or their spouses had several scheduled appearances in Maryland Monday.

It was not a good weekend for Senator Hillary Clinton.  She lost some contests over the weekend to Senator Barack Obama.  Also, her longtime aide and campaign manager quit and left for another opportunity.

Mary Bubala reports Senator Clinton started Monday fresh, going back to what she does best---talking to small groups and talking to voters one-on-one.  Senator Clinton reached out to union workers at the General Motors plant in White Marsh, getting briefed on the latest in hybrid technology.

"We need to create new jobs.  That's why coming to this plant was so important.  These are the jobs of the future," she said.

Questions about the economy dominated the small group discussion with a couple dozen workers.  They also applauded Clinton's plan to end the war and asked about the campaign.

"I'm looking forward to standing on the stage with Senator McCain," she said.  "I believe I can go toe to toe with him.  We need a Democratic nominee who can stand there and say the Democrats take a back seat to no one when it comes to protecting and defending our country.  We just think we can do it smarter and we can make it better for our kids going forward."

Despite the apparent Obama momentum, there are still a lot of big name supporters behind Hillary Clinton in the state of Maryland.  Governor O'Malley and Senator Mikulski were with Clinton Monday in White Marsh.

The 1st Mariner Arena was packed and the crowd was ready to see and hear the candidate who's getting much of the credit for putting Maryland on this year's presidential primary map.  Barack Obama also packed the house at the Comcast Center in College Park.

In Baltimore, the crowds circled the block.  Supporters and undecided voters waited in the cold for hours to hear Barack Obama's call for their vote.

The Barack and Hillary squareoff electrified the usually mundane Maryland primary.

"If you vote for me Tuesday, then I promise you this--we will not just win Maryland, we will win the Democratic nomination.  We will win the general election and you and I together, we will go forward to change this country and change the world.  Thank you, Maryland!  I love you," he said.
