Annapolis Mayoral Election Comes Down To 235 Votes

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ/AP) ― Residents of Maryland's capital city headed to the polls Tuesday to elect their mayor. 

Political reporter Pat Warren reports Democrat Josh Cohen has taken the lead in the race for mayor of Annapolis in unofficial results.

According to results posted on the city's Web site Tuesday night, Cohen, a county councilman, had 3,729 votes, or 45% of the vote, with 16 of 16 precincts reporting. Republican Alderman David Cordle had 3,494 votes, or 42%, and independent Chris Fox, a local bar owner, had 1,056 votes, or 13%. The winner will succeed Mayor Ellen Moyer, who could not run again because of term limits.

The Annapolis Democratic Central Committee had to choose a nominee to replace Zina Pierre, who won the primary in September, but withdrew after various personal financial concerns became public. Cohen was their choice. 

"He's always worked closely with the African-American community so it's not a big step from Zina to Josh," said one voter.

"In a small town, it's about the issues and who is the more qualified, experienced person," said Cordle.

"Every single problem in the city of Annapolis is directly related to our financial ability to address that problem," Fox said.

So far, it looks like Richard E. Israel is the alderman for Ward 1.  Frederick M. Paone is the alderman for Ward 2, Classie Gillis Hoyle for Ward 3, Sheila M. Finlayson for Ward 4, Matthew Silverman for Ward 5, Kenny Kirby for Ward 6, Ian Pfeiffer for Ward 7 and Ross Harold Arnett III for Ward 8.

The ward 7 votes are very close, though. Only 53 votes separate Pfeiffer and opponent Jennifer J. Monteith.
