Baltimore Aquarium To Release Healthy Sea Turtle

BALTIMORE (AP) ― Officials with the National Aquarium in Baltimore are releasing a loggerhead sea turtle into the Atlantic Ocean at Assateague State Park.

After a year of rehabilitation, the aquarium was to release the turtle at 11 a.m. Saturday at the state park.

The turtle was brought to the aquarium because it was underweight and couldn't dive or feed properly since it had an overwhelming amount of organisms living in its shell.

Within days, officials at the aquarium removed more than 10 pounds of barnacles, blue mussels and sea grasses from the turtle's shells. The turtle was treated for deep shell infections and received CT scans at the Johns Hopkins Hospital to help with its recovery.

The turtle has been fitted with a satellite tag so its movements can be tracked.
