New Law Would Change Existing Animal Rules

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) ―

There's a new law being proposed in the Anne Arundel County Council that would change the existing animal law and no longer require shelters for dogs who stay in their owners' houses most of the time, or whose owners are home most of the time.

Lt. James Richey, commander of the Anne Arundel County Animal Shelter, is against the changes.

"Quite often, there will be an urgent matter inside the house and the dog owners will become so involved in their personal issues that their dogs are neglected," he told Richard Sher.

Anne Pearson lives in Edgewater with her one year old collie, Siri.

"I think it's insane to require doghouses in the first place. I'm always home with Siri or I take him with me when I go out," she said.

Pearson was cited by animal control officers because there is no doghouse on her property. The Anne Arundel County Animal Control Commission found her not guilty.

"You love your dog like a member of the family. It should be his/her choice whether to go into a doghouse or not. The decision should be the dog's," Lt. Richey said.

Lt. Richey says he likes the law as it exists now.
